At the first of,June during our local city wide yard sale I discovered a box of books on the last day of the sale's. I had asked my girlfriend to look through the box for me so I could pick through the nick knacks on one of the tables that was set up. It was threatening rain that afternoon, and there were not many people still out. We were about to leave and I asked if she found any books, she told me she did not and I proceeded to go through the box myself. Long story short, I pulled out 11 first edition's including(The Grapes Of Wrath, by John Steinbeck, First edition, first printing.) In Very good condition, unfortunately it did not have the dust jacket. I paid 5 cents a piece for the books, and went hurriedly home to verify my find. It was in fact the real deal. Now I own the Pulitzer Prize winner for fiction(in 1939) and paid 5 cents for it. Patients prevails to those who have them.....

Have no idea what the market's gonna do over time, but that was an investment you
can't lose on! Like you, I would add it to my personal collection, however if the need
ever arose you've got something with a value that will continue to escalate.

Thanks guys!! Thought i had a First edi. of Gone with the wind, turned out to be a book club edition. Oh well, i will keep on keepin on!!!

I have the same book... almost. Mine says second printing before publication under 'first published in 1939'. Close but no cigar, still a $50 book though. Nice find on the true 1st edition.

What would a person pay for that book? nice find!

wait a minute...don't get his hopes up on big dollars...
oops..correction...good going..too bad the dust jacket is not there...or the painting.

First Edition Points to identify The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck

quote:
The advance issue was identical to the first trade edition with the exception that it was accompanied by a publisher's card which was produced on glossy heavy paper, and measures 8" tall by 5" wide. It features the reproduction of a contemporary painting of the author by Stjernstrom. The card notes: JOHN STEINBECK whose new novel, THE GRAPES OF WRATH is published by The Viking Press." This same photo painting reproduction was also utilized as the frontispiece portrait of John Steinbeck for NEW YORK HERALD TRIBUNE critic Lewis Gannett's publication JOHN STEINBECK: PERSONAL AND BIBLIOGRAPHICAL NOTES, published in stapled wrappers by Viking Press also in 1939.
