Folks,
I've been stating out of the woods here in NC, but had the itch to detect this week. I stopped by a 1928 house in town that I've had my eye on for some time now and knocked on the door. After some sweet talking, batting my eyes a few times, and showing her one of my relic cases, I convinced the 91 year old lady that I wasn't there to sell her a set of encyclopedias. She pointed out a large tree in the backyard that the kids used climb. The yard wasn't huge but just enough to keep me busy for a few hours. The front yard turned out to be a dud with only a few wheat pennies. :dontknow: It wasn't until I got to the back yard that I started getting signals. My first keepers were an old broken pocketwatch and then a Tootsietoy airplane. I then hit an area between a small shed and the large tree. Signal after signal turned up one toy soldier, then another, then another............ Within about a 8' circle I dug up 8 toy soldiers! :hello2: Some were fairly deep, so the kids must have buried them. Are these mostly WW1 or WW2 soldiers?
I then slowly worked my way towards the large tree which has about a 4" layer of pine straw and leaf mulch to get through before you hit dirt. Next came a pocket knife, a suspender clip, and then an old firetruck very close to the tree base. I was just getting ready to dig another signal and I felt a pain on my hand through my gloves. Then the other hand. By the time I had realized I had dug into a yellow jacket nest I had been stung five times (both hands, one ankle, stomach, and eyebrow).
D-mn did those little #@&*#! nail me!!! Of course I ran like a senior citizen at a grand opening buffet, but I had dropped my shovel right by the hole. :o Using a hammer tied to a long piece of rope I was finally able to fish it out of there. The bees were even stinging the rope! I'm dying to know what else is around that tree, but I'm going to let it bee be now until winter before I go back.
My finds:
*Eight toy soldiers - WW1 or WW2
*Tootsietoy airplane
*Barclay firetruck (has white rubber tires)
*Gold toy badge. ANY IDEAS?
*Wright Bros. / Smokey Mtn Park aluminum token
*Pocket knife
*Suspender clip with "Solid" on it
*(4) Wheat pennies (oldest 1918)
*Ford cap
*Pocket watch parts.

Thanks for looking,
MM
P.S. HAPPY FATHER'S DAY to all you great Dad's out there. :hello2: :occasion14:

Nice finds Doug! :icon_thumright:

The fire truck is very unusual, I've never seen one like that before. :o

The soldiers appear to be WWI vintage. :icon_thumright:

Sorry to hear about your "bee incident", at least your not allergic! :laughing7:

Dave,
I must say, I do enjoy hunting old yards for the variety of relics in some of them.
Thanks for the ID.
Have a great weekend,
Doug

Thanks Bunker. I have a feeling there are more toys to be found there. I had a good signal before I got nailed. ;D

Great looking finds Doug! So tell me, what were you trying to show that 91 year old lady after "battering" your eyes at her? :laughing9:

Great finds find Doug. I always like finding those old kids toys. I'll see you soon buddy.

Some nice finds there Dug and some kid was real careless about his toys. Sorry about the insects. Guess what our local high school athletic department mascot is? Look below, Q.

Ok, here is some help for you:

1. Take a can of the long range shooting bee killer to the location at sunset. Yellowjackets and honey bees seem to like to be at home early, even on a Friday night. Then poison the crap out of them.

2. I think I have a similar soldier--I would put the dress as Spanish-American. Unless you think those are helmets. But I think they are the campaign hats, like the Rough Riders. Heck of a battle--probably a bad artillery barrage for the loss of those body parts.

3. Could that be Amelia Earhart's plane?

4. Love the truck, and echo some of the other comments.

I am guessing 1930's for the toys, and whether boys of the 30's preferred to play with Rough Riders or Doughboys, I don't know. Could have been daddy's soliders. Anybody with a 1933 Montgomery Wards catalogue out there?

Token is too cool. I couldn't read it all to date it, so you get to make the call. Or someone out there has a reference book with it in it.

Put out the contract on those bees and get back there, I am anxious to see what else you find.

Wow, very nice finds indeed! I found 1 lead soldier and I thought that was pretty cool but finding that many i s pretty darn awesome.

Thanks for sharing.

Cool Finds!!
Love the Troop Transport and West Point Badge
Still charming the Ladies huh :laughing7:

Love em! I have one of those toys that is a WW2 camera man.

Really cool finds. I was once attacked by yellow jackets when picking blackberries in my back yard. Turned out I was mildly allergic so avoid them since. As I'm now getting up there in age, I advise you to clue in the elderly lady about those bees so she'll stay away from that part of the yard. Best of luck in finding more super stuff once that area is safe for detecting! HH Andi

Wow Doug, found the entire brigade there pal! You think those yellow jackets were protecting those soldiers or what :tongue3:

I got blasted by those darn things digging a barber dime once, ouch! :o Great finds as usual. Hows that heat down there? Goodluck on the next troop deployment! jgas

The badge is a West Point hat badge. Here's a link to a complete one.

WIT,
I was surprised myself. On a few of them I only received a slight signal and they were down deep. Glad I chose to dig them.

Thanks G-olden years. I'll do that. I was going to put some of the relics in a case to give to her so I'll warn her when I go back this week and also spray some hornet spray around that hole.

LMAO! The heat is horrible down here. I'm roasting my finely toned butt off. :tongue3: Send me some of the 60 degree Hoosier weather. You can send it in one of those old bottles you dig. The Jacob Spahn one will be fine. :laughing9:

Great bunch of finds. Please bee more careful in the future.

warn the old lady at her age a attack by the bees could be fatal * do her a "kindness" tell her to thank her for allowing you to detect you will wipe out the lil buggers for her (gets you back in to detect some more too ) -- word of a good deed done will spread * trust me --- might even get you a few more "invites" from freinds or neighbors

Ivan,
I am all about good deeds, donating, and sharing my finds as you may know. It's the right thing to do, and it certainly opens new doors. I'll get over there to spray that nest this week when I drop off some of the relics I found.
Thanks,
MM
