the "TIGER" 50 ton vessel left by HAWKINS IN 1565 with french (in jacksonville)
thanks to a article posted by Terry Armstrong --- I did a bit of reading seems that according to a 1575 recorded account of the earlier 1565 voyage of HAWKINS as told by a man named SPARKE -- that there were 4 original vessels --- the JESUS OF LUBEK (700 TONS) -- SALOMON (140 TONS)--- TIGER (50 TONS)* --SWALLOW (30 TONS)
In the account it states "UPON THEIR REQUEST ( the french) WE SPARED (sold?) THEM ONE OF OUR BARKS OF 50 TONS*" --- I take this to mean the "TIGER"* AS SHE WAS THE ONLY VESSEL LISTED AS 50 TONS --- it also notes a french vessel of 80 tons (four score) and (2 )--15 ton pinnesses at anchor in the river --- the french called it the MAY RIVER (possibly this why the village at the mouth of the river / PORT was / is called MAYPORT to this day?) -- the modern name of the river is THE ST JOHNS RIVER. ---- Ivan
