sorry to burst your bubble, but the supposedly silver wheatie is actually a steel cent. During WWII they had to subsitute copper because that was made for machinery for the army and weapons. They decided to use steel for the production of pennies in 1943 and I believe 1944. If you ever find a copper 1943 then it is a rare find. That is an awesome find anyways! I would love to find a steel cent! :)

You better check again an use a magnet... there is only 12 known to exist... not saying you didn't find one ..just saying there are alot of counterfeit ones that dupe people into thinking they have a genuine 1943 copper

About five years ago, a man in Georgia found an original 1943 copper penny, (supposedly in a drawer, or change, I can't remember which!), had it authenticated, and was going to put it up for auction in Los Angeles. He decided to take the coin there himself, so as not to draw any unwanted attention, and proceeded to drive, (yes, DRIVE, friends!), out to California from Georgia! Somewhere along the way, he either dropped or accidentally SPENT the coin, the last known location the coin was actually seen by said man, was somewhere in Louisiana. He had decided to keep it in his pocket, incognito, with his other change! I am well aware of how much this resembles an "urban legend", however, the news channels in East Tennessee, along with the Knoxville News Sentinel, (via the AP, I believe), widely reported the incident. One can only assume that the man would be traveling on I-10 from GA. to L.A., although this is pure speculation on my part, as there was nothing else logical about the situation! So, watch your change closely! Providing this is a fact, (and it SHOULD be true, as the man who authenticated the coin was supposedly interviewed by the media), then there is a coin upwards of mid six figure value out there somewhere, either on/in the ground, or being circulated! Hopefully someone on T-Net will find it, and I'm sure the mentality of our members will see to it such a "mistake" doesn't happen a second time! Great hunting and good luck all! Regards, Richard

also not likely a steel cent would come out of the ground with any shine left on it if it had been there any time at all......not impossible, but not likely

Back in the day before people knew mercury was so toxic kids would rub mercury on copper pennies, mercury will bond to the copper and turn it silver. It does not last for ever but it did make the coin appear silver. Miners used copper pans coated with mercury to catch fine flower gold easier. There are ton's of mercury in streams where gold was placer mined lost during gold recovery. The old Bucketline dredge's used copper plates, covered with a fine coat of mercury to trap the fine gold. Mercury will coat copper very easy.

I say silver plated also... Lol, the Bronze steel cent story just keeps getting better. :hello2: :laughing7: I first researched this coin in 1999. :icon_scratch: The Bronze Steel cent, came to be because some 1943 cents were struck on bronze planchets when they should have been on steel. Most have been found but one is still out there, as the story goes. This one coin is worth over 1 million dollars. You need to find a 1943 that is still bronze and not steel and won't stick to a magnet. If you find this or have this your a millionaire.

Keep @ it and HH!!

So close - I found a '44 Wheat today - copper as can be... Keep on diggin!

:icon_thumright: very cool finds

Mud(S.W.A.T.), skypilot here! I agree, sounds like the urban legend, but check archives of the Associated Press, and The Knoxville News Sentinel, and you'll see what I mean! Try keywords million dollar penny lost, or something of that nature! Great hunting and good luck! Regards, Richard
