The Shipwreck That Changed The World

I don't have any dug coins for today but I did make this awesome find via a coin seller. This piece of eight is dated 1783 and was part of the cargo of the Spanish brigantine of war, El Cazador. This great ship was carrying over 450,000 pesos of minted coins when it sunk in 1784. The coins were being sent from Vera Cruz, Mexico, for New Orleans with the intention to redeem nearly worthless Spanish paper currency then in circulation in Spanish-owned Louisiana. The pesos were to have stabilized the Spanish monetary system in colonial North America, and, hopefully to have solidified Spain's North American holdings.

To make a long story a little shorter, had this shipment of treasure arrived at it's intended destination, the United States may never have achieved it's present size. This is why the wreck of the El Cazador is commonly known today as "The wreck that changed the world."

On August 2, 1993, the wrecksite of El Cazador was accidentally discovered by Capt. Jerry Murphy, the captain of a fishing vessel named "Mistake."

Here is a picture of one of the actual coins from this wreck. I consider it a great find.

At this time you can get one of these for about $90 to $150+ depending on grade. Make sure you get a certificate signed by Jim Reahard.
