As the crops start to come off the fields we can finally start to swing!
Over the weekend we found a few trinkets. We can ID the token as being from the building of the C&D Canal, a hair barrette, a complete bell, some maxi balls as well as smashed round balls, and Indian cents. The buckle is of interest. It was silver plated with some still visible. Do you have an opinion on the buckle? IMG_20181001_165249_969.webpIMG_20181001_165216_557.webp

Congrats! Great Finds! What was the C&D canal?

Congrats! Great Finds! What was the C&D canal?

The Chesapeake and Delaware Canal was hand/mule dug in 1825. Rather than pay the workers in cash they would get tokens they they could trade at the company store.

In the original photo, the C&D Canal token doesn't show too well. Here is a better pic.IMG_20181001_192642.webp

I like the token. That’s a real nice save. Congrats

These canals all have an interesting but brief history. By the time they were finished enough to go anywhere the railroads had already made them obsolete. I worked at the C&O canal NHP for a while. The engineering was pretty interesting and they took rides on a slightly modernized barge.

Nice find, congrats!

All that from a field! How do you know where to even begin in such a large area? Great old finds. I’ll bet there isn’t much trash there either. Nice work.

Nice!!! Congrats!!!

Congratulations on the nice relic hunt! :occasion14:

There was a little bit of trash near the road but no t in the center of the field. We Do some research first the target are as with pottery shards or old glass and brick.

Well done in the farm field.
The Canal Token is the find of the day.
Congratulations

That canal token is awesome! Being dated really makes it special! I was just up that way this past Monday in the water. Port Herman, then Whites Crystal beach.
