in the old days the king of spain got 20% of all that was shipped the "royal tax"---everyone hated it---in the first place just to get to the "new world" and do business you needed a "permit" from the king--you had to go thru his ministers which had to be *"paid" to get them for you --sometimes you even had to #"hire on freinds or family " of these guys--after paying for the right to risk your wealth and life --@you then go to the new world worked and sweated risked your life there was a chance you wouldn't make anything --death and robbery and war was all around-- "then after you hit it bigtime and wanted to "come home and live well" on your hard earned money ---well you had to just give over 20-% to the king.

However today things are differant
if you find a shipwreck in florida waters you must "apply for permits" and *pay the state to explore them and salvage them.
# then you must prove you have the "correct people" for the job
@after doing this there is a chance theres very little or nothing there worth while.
"and last but not least if you do find stuff the state /king still gets his/their 20% off the top.
as mel brooks said....ah its good to be the king..

That is still not a bad deal, especially if you have a good, well-researched, viable project.

Certainly it is a major league hassel to work through all of the bureaucratic red tape, but if you are committed, it can be done. Just form a company with some like minded folks, combine your time, talent, equipment and money and who knows where that will take you?!

;)

Where could a guy into a deal like that Tom...sounds nice! LOL

Ivan, great analogy...I chuckled. There has always been and will always be government...and you will always fair better with them then against them. It's the rules of life...if you want to play...know the rules well!

Ivan, yes things have changed.
Now if you were to find a Spanish shipwreck chances are Spain will want it ALL.
If you were to know the location of a shipwreck there are tons of paperwork that muct be done and thats even before you know for sure what you are looking for.
