Simply put, to dig tokens. After spending the last three days feeling like crap, (what I like to call "Bed, Bath, and Beyond Hell"), I had to get out of the house. With no new sites opening up, I decided to retry a couple of areas that I've had luck at in the past. Finding nothing at the first site, I went to an area that I had found a nice semi-key date V-nickel, and a worn Barber dime. I told myself that I would dig every iffy signal, and these are what popped up. All were crappy but repeatable signals. The bad news is that the token is obviously bent. The good news is that it's unlisted in Stuart Pritchards Colorado token book. It's a "Good For 5 cents", from "The John Stamison Bar", located at 1744 Curtis St., Denver. That location was where the Denver Post newspaper office was located in the 1890's. Other than that, I'm at a loss for info. Have to hit the library and backtrack the business directories. Now I got to figure out how to straighten the token without damaging it. First token find of the year for me.

Hey, that's a very cool token, congratulations on the silver too!

Looks like you have found a rare unlisted trade token. Possibly late 1880's.

I have straightened brass tokens with some sucess. PM me if you like.

Rick

Congrats on your first token find of the year, CurbDigger!

And all of your silver isn't bad either!

Great hunt if all you dug was "iffies".

Hello! I have had some Luck straightening brass items by sandwiching them between two pieces of soft wood like pine and putting the whole setup in a vice! Turn until it starts to squeeze the token straight and then stop! Do it a little, maybe one half or a whole turn every couple of hours, or if you have a lot of patience, over a period of days. Slower is better. Too much to fast and it will possibly crack. You may need to bend the fold out some with two needle nose plyers or put the straight end in a vice protected by two pieces of wood sandwiched again and tighten that up and then get a needle nose plyers and something to protect the bent part of the coin from the plyers teeth and bend it up slowly, just enough to go back to the vice trick. No promises though, just a thought and what I have done in the past! Good Luck and God Bless! Paul

If that token is worth as much as a belt plate is--which it Likely is!--I would send it to one of the plate guys for restoration. They acually heat the brass so that it will bend back into shape. If it's a multiple hundred dollar find, I'd hate to ruin it with a set of vise grips.

Here is some information for you...

Roland posts on the ARH forum--and his work is incredible. On page 2 you'll see a beautiful, restored NC button... He certainly has what it takes to remove the bend in your token...

And I'll pass along another name: Robert McDaniel also does incredible work: 256-767-6636

Best Wishes--and Congratulations!

Yes, heating is key to the operation, however, applying too much heat might have an effect on surface corrosion products. The heat may burn them out, leaving the surface horribly pitted.

I would like to see that when i wake up in the morning as well. Awesome digs.

I found a token that was bent and was told to put it in boiling water to heat it and straighten a little at a time reheating often. It worked great on my token. If it is valuable I'd send it to a profesional. Mr. McDaniel did a great job on a buckel for me.

Good luck

That is one good reason to wake up....Matt

Very nice token and way to go on returning to that site. Crappy signals are my favorite! - Jim

Hello! I didn't mean a pair of vice grips! Heating sounds good though if done very careful. Good Luck to you Paul
