The "Real Item"

Came across this in an old garage. It was being thrown out, so I claimed it, as I needed a thermostat, and this has 2. Before I cannibalize it I'd like to find out what it was made for.

I've seen similar devices made for heating bearings for interference (press) fit, but this one doesn't seem to be made for that purpose.

Re: The "Real Item"

That bar is a heating element. About 150 watts! Tell you what: I'll let you know if the lights flicker.

Re: The "Real Item"

Is that copper tubing look like it was once hooked up to water or another fluid. I've used those heating elements on other thing, but it looks like there may have been a container that sat up aginst the heating element. So one thermostat controled the temp of the fluid and the other controled the element. Just a guess.

I think it's a home-made device for heating and shaping plastic or PVC pipe. Open the back and see if there is a heating element and blower motor for the pipe sticking out the front.

Re: The "Real Item"

Upon closer inspection ( and a peek inside ) I found that one thermostat is connected to a heating element which runs along the back of (and in contact with) the bar. Both the element and the bar are bound together (wrapped) with a Teflon impregnated material. Not Teflon tape. The bar is bolted to a standoff on either side, which appear to function as heatsinks. The capillary bulb for the thermostat controlling this bar comes through a hole in the control box and is coiled loose , as to be placed in or on whatever is to be heated by the bar. Lets call this part the "lower heater".

A couple of pix:

The second thermostat is connected to another heating element which was placed inside the copper tubeing assembly at the top, but unlike the lower heater the bulb for this thermostat is not coiled loose, but alongside and in direct contact with the assembly. we can call this the upper heater.

To top it all off the line cord plug is 50 cycle; not the standard 60 for the U.S.

Looks like a protoype fluxcapictor to me.

I've removed parts from the "Flux Capacitor" and installed them in my (under construction) smoker. I guess that it's now a "Smoke Capacitor"

"What it is" is now "what it was" so "what is it?" is now "what was it?"
