finding a coin with a hole in it is intresting. heres some info as to what you may or may not have. a coin with a square hole in it around the 12:00 pos means it was done early on type-b cut nails or horse shoe type. common in mid-1800s in addition coins where holed for copper patches (large cents) for machines and household items and for nailing beams to foundations corners to bring good luck to the homestead. ROUND HOLES found in coins where made around 1890s and on refered to as wire nails most likley to where as jewerly or a a special keep sake ;)

? ?What is strange about large cent or any other coins with holes in them is will never no what the person was thinking or doing when he or she made it ?! ? I have found a number of both silver and copper coins with holes in them ?, ?I found a 3 cent silver piece in an area where many buttons came from and it had 2 holes in it (one on the top and bottom) was most likely used for a button.. I also found a large cent 1838 with a ?thin chain and wire still attached. Also have found large cents with holes as large as a half inch across and was most likely used as washers for some machine use.....I have read in some cases the pioneer settlers carried them on a chain or string around their neck or attached to something ,not to lose them in there pockets...Also During trade...Indians used coins as jewelry and wore coins around their neck at times....I hope this helps........Seeker

what a bummer when you find a hole in a coin. i have a 1855 over 1854 Half dollar in Vf-20 worth about 250.00, but has a hole in it what a bummer
