This should be Day 2 & a tiny bit, as Cru'dad did a short 1 hour hunt last week fluking out a tiny hammered halfpenny of Charles I.
Today we both gridded for 5 hours in 2 different areas of the field. The first area I got the cut qrter hammered & in the after Lunch option Cru'dad got a stunning Lizzy Sixpence.
I was pleased at how dry the surface was after all the gales & rain this weekend, but the loose sandy soil soaked it in & the wind dried it!

1 Scrappy
1790s Royal Artillery Button
Livery Button
3 Jettons
John Higden Crotal Bell circa 1640s
2 Tudor Strap-ends
Charles I Coin Weight
Top of a Medieval Horse Harness Pendant
Bronze Age Awl?
Cut Qrter of Henry III
Charles I Halfpenny

1582 Lizzy Sixpence

Each time I go to the UK to detect, I pray for a potato field to be available. The deep plowing always brings up 'goodies'! Congratulations on some great finds.

Love that big 1582 sixpence! Is that a skull behind his head?

Another wonderful day hunting, congrats! :icon_thumleft:

No worries, when I joined I promised to post every hunt however good, & that's what I've done.

What a haul! That silver is great. Congrats!

Cru Dad never fails to produce the goods, congrats on the beautiful 1582 Sixpence!
That coin must have been worth quite a bit in the 16thc.

If all I'd found was these two complete crotal bells, I'd be happy. :laughing7:

1 complete, 1 3/4, & 1 half.

The number of high denominations coinage has us wondering what went on in this field. It's my understanding from all the evidence, that ploughing didn't start until at least the Georgian period. So with the large number of Sheep Bells we are getting (10 times the average), we think Sheep Market??

Love that Lizzie, detecting anywhere in the UK is on my bucket list. We done sir!!

Probably just a turn of phase but you don't want to try just 'anywhere', 80% of the land is empty.

If anything, it solidly confirms that bells of this size were truly worn by the sheep.
I've always felt the majority of the bells I find here in Ontario came from a horse harness. :icon_scratch:

Hope you and your Dad are both in good health this winter.

Not sure how they translate over there, as they could be used on anything, but generally here the smaller ones like this were sheep or goats & the larger were horse or cattle.

As always some beautiful finds , I liked your reasoning on the market[emoji106] is there a day 3?

Id love to see a photo of everything you've found through the years. It must be crazy
