The "new" old fairground produces a little more silver
Hi everyone,Cruising around T'Net this morning gave me the itch (or was that the poison ivy?)Anyway, haven't had much time for detecting lately as I had to move but I needed a break.I moved out of an 1860's or 70's farmhouse and into a 1890's farmhouse.I detected the lawn here earlier this spring and came up with 5 silver dimes, mercs and rosies.I also fished some old furniture in the barn and came up with four more pieces so I decided to try my luck again.Halfway between the barn and the house I unearthed what I thought might be some sort of stash box and was really hoping that I'd found my first cache but as it turns out it was just an old door from a woodstove but I took pics after I unearthed the top just in case, well needless to say I was disappointed After some more searching and finding nothing I decided to go back to my new old fairground.I've done this area only a few times but it is now an airport and not much original ground left so it seems to be getting pretty well worked out.I started in the main pocket where I've found most of my coins and found nothing. Then I went a little further up the strip and came up with a '21 wheatie a little further away from there I got a '44P 40% wartime nickel.Hunted that area some more and came up with nothing more.I went into a small patch of woods between the airstrip and a graveyard where I had found a '42 wheatie before and was getting nothing and it was getting dark, just about to give up,pretty happy with my silver nickel as it's only the second one I've ever found. Then I got one of those right on top signals, figured it was probably just a piece of junk, scraped the pine needles aside and saw a dark disc, thought it was a clad quarter, wiped it with my thumb and it turned pure silver! Yee ha!! An 1898 O barber quarter my first this year!!Never expected it,not with the fact that it gave an on top signal and was in fact just barely covered.Anyway it made for a good topper to a day that started a little disappointing.Good luck and thanks for reading, Bootstrap
