The nature of 'El Gato'
A retired Border Patrol friend of mine told me where I might find a retired nemisis of his in a cantina in Nuevo Laredo who would tell me stories of his smuggling days and playing hide and seek with with the Gringos .
When told who had recommended me ; the elder gentleman regaled me for several hours , over many cervesas , with tales of his days smuggling over the border .
Midafternoon he invited me to his house for a bite to eat .
Modest place presided over by a gracious older lady that placed food before us when we sat at the table without speaking a word .
Meal finished , he motioned me to one of two rocking chairs in the room and he took the other and began treating me to more stories of his cross border days . 5 well fed cats were lounging about the room and his wife ; silent and back to us , was
at the sink cleaning the dishes from our repast .
The stories grew grander as he rocked harder and suddenly he lifted one leg and cheek and broke wind that would have gratified a young mule coming fresh out of the barn .
A 5 cat tornado erupted doing hot laps around the room and off the walls until they found the open window and jumped out .
Momma is still back to all of this doing dishes and I'm starting out of my chair to follow the cats when the old gentleman placed a reassuring hand on my knee and explained ....
"Relax ,Senior . My wife is a good lady and deaf as a post . It's the nature of cats that they take no chances ...
And every time Momma smells chit she starts beatin hell outta them cats .
