I am an pretty big time collector, I am pretty deep into several areas.... But I absolutely refuse to to fall for this... a 1916 D Merc. Hell to the NO!

Ebay has about 300 listings to offer today... all the way from $90,000 to $500 for this crap

BAH! There are FAR better coins to include in a collection that have more than novelty value. This over-hyped coin is a big no for me.

Yes, I agree but, it's all about supply and demand. The Mercury dime series has a lot of collectors and every one of them needs a 1916 D to complete the set. Same deal with the 1909 S VDB, there are tons of them around. The Barber coin series has some very low mintages that are very reasonable because they are not as popular with collectors. I never was one to go with the flock, so I collect Barbers as well as colonial and state coinage. Some of the state coppers with an estimated population of 30 or so can be bought for under $100.

Before i knew key dates of dimes i bought a dime book from a flea market that was almost complete...
I just put it away at the time where it sat for years...
One day i ran across info on the 1916D...
So i get out the dime book and open to see the 16d spot filled... i was happy... UNTIL
I popped it out and looked at reverse to see NO D.
heh
Been looking for one in the wild ever since.
For i refuse to pay retail for one.
In fact i sold off that book of dimes long ago.

Exactly my point! There are a lot of really great and interesting finds out there. And there seems to be a lot of "new money" hitting the market too. For instance prices for Mexican war of Independence issues have tripled/quadrupled the past few years. Coins I could get for a few hundred go for a few thousand. You see these fantastic old collections go up for auction...coins that no one was aware of or wanted 30-40 years ago, but some dude saw the potential...and watch the hammer go down at the price of my first new car!

Actually... what i heard was that circulation coins are dying out but the rare stuff is pulling money.

I have my folks blue folder with merc dimes. There’s a very worn 1916 and I keep squinting my eyes trying to see a D. Nope. Don’t think so. They were already rare when my folks started collecting in 1955. My folks took lots of mercs from circulation before ‘64 but most were late 30s or war dates. So many war dates made. They are the most common detector finds too.

Wonder how long the coin craze will last... some say coin collecting is a dying hobby... but ?
check this out.... this is a site that collects upcoming auctions from the major houses.... coin collecting is pretty far from dying out!

EBAY is the clearing house of coins for newbies and the occasional hot deal of someone trying to unload grandpas stash.
