Southeast Texas
Detector(s) used
Minelab X-Terra 50 and Bounty Hunter Pioneer 505
I was at our school today, searching around the entrances, since I started December 28th, I've found about $12.00
in pennies, and clad silver, I found a 1965 quarter, but that was as close as I had come to a REAL silver coin.
Anyway, back to the story, a big red pickup goes by me in the parking lot, makes a u-turn, and the man in the truck asks if I've found anything good, I told him about a dollars worth of change was all, he asked to see it, I showed it to him, mud, dirt and all. Then he asks if I have permission to hunt the school property. I told him I had spoke with the school board president and he said it was o.k., he asked thhe presidents name and I told him..... Then he points off to the end of the parking lot and tells me "There used to be a store over there, and a train depot that was torn down about 80 years ago, you may want to try over there, I told him thanks, and also told him that I had seen the posted, no trespassing signs, so I hadn't gone over there he told me "That property belongs to the school, and if anybody asks, you tell them the Judge said you could metal detect there, then he gave me his card, he IS THE JUDGE!!!!",
I know, I know I'm long winded, anyway, I haul butt over there, its almost dark, get a few pieces of lead, an old copper flashlight switch and a bunch of beer cans, on the way out, I start scanning the ditches and found a 1906 dime about 4 inches from the edge of this deep 3 foot ditch, I almost peed on myself, I put it in my wallet (more advice ffrom somebody on TN) and headed straight home to post it, I still don't have a good camera, but my son showed me how to use my web cam to get a clear shot.

Thanks Ya'll
Does anybody know why they call it a barber dime?, I would have figured it would be a liberty or something, it just looked like lady liberties head to me....

The excitement of your post is absolutely refreshing!!! :) Congratulations on such a great find AND getting permission to hunt that new site!!! 8)

Nana :)

Thanks,
where I live (Southeast Texas) we don't have any Civil War sites except Sabine Pass, and you would be shot, gutted, shot again, ran over with a pickup truck a few times, then....., you guessed it, shot again, for even THINKING!!! about going in there with a detector, so I didn't figure I would ever find anything good.
Then out of the blue the locaL JUDGE! gives me a hint that lets me get a 100 YEAR OLD COIN!!!!, he also told me where the old train depot (torn down 50 years ago) and the original 1 room school house (torn down 60 years ago!!!!) are and told me that if I had any problems with people harrasing me, have them call him, he used to have a metal detector and said he had a blast with it.
I asked him if he wanted to go out to those sites and run a few passes, he said he's too old...

But I AM SO PSYCHED NOW!!!!!
The ring was cool, because it got the wife in the loop, she's even talking about going to the beach so I can see what I can find (SHE WANTS MORE JEWELRY).

Gotta go, TIme to eat.

While I was typing this Jopher answered my question on the Barber name of the coin, Thanks!!!

Thanks again...

Clint

WTG MonkeyBoy! I've yet to pull a Barber from the ground but I will one day. Beautiful coin!

Monk,
I'm almost more excited about your experience with "The Judge" than the coin you found. Our hobby really involves a lot of good public relations and dealing with people.

I would hunt the location some more and then call the judge to thank him for the tip. Offer to show him what you found there. Maybe he can open some more doors for you.

He might even be able to get you closer to the civil war area. Or even better. Abandoned property owned by the state. Who knows?

Congrats on the coin. She's a beauty! I'm excited for you. ;)

Thanks everybody,
I feel like I have A.D.D. and Tourettes, I keep laughing outloud and can't sit still, I wanna go back, now....
Won't get much sleep tonight, Thanks for the advice Ridley, I'll try that. Heck, I'll even give him that dime if he wants it, I got the pictures, I know I found it, I'm happy..

Love.that.coin!! Very wise to obtain permission and I think the story with the judge was just grand!! GL there and I am SURE will get more!!

Laater...

Great dime!! I am still looking for a barber coin. The judge is your key to the area. Take the advice and thank him and ask if you could but him a cup of coffee to sit down and chat about other areas.

Wow, super find. I've yet to come across one of those. You made a great find, yet the judge finding you out there and giving you those pointers and backup might be the best find of the day bro!.........congrats on that barber :)

Damn fun reading your post! I agree that your excitment is awesome!

I feel that way on the "inside" everytime I find something good but dont really express it like you do! :-\

I enjoy your posts, and look forward to watchng you find more stuff...

Way to go Monkeyboy!! Ever since you've had that detector........you have had the best of luck!! That ring was just a start it seems. So glad to hear your story and it sounds like you made a new friend. A dang Judge to boot!! It was cool that he was firing away at the questions and you were able to give him honest answers!!

Congrats,
Moon

Great story, Monkeyman!

I'm a little upset with you right now, though. :-\ I've been hunting for two years for a barber coin....any barber coin......haven't found one yet......and you've been detecting for less than 10 days and you dig one up! I'm so jealous...but also happy for you! ;)

Way to go Monkeyboy!! Nice write up and nice coin! THose barbers are a little harder to come by down south than up north here. WTG. Enjoy.

Should have got the local judge to come swing with you for a bit. I bet he can get lots of permission slips to hunt ;D
