hey gang,
I was back in my old haunt today and stopped by the Hemet Stock Farm to see if I could take some pics. The owner wasn't there so I will have to come back to see if I can get permission to md the site. I don't have much info, but what I have I will share ( if anyone has anything to add.. please do ). The area known has Hemet started as grazing land for the San Luis Rey Mission and was called Rancho San Jacinto. When the missions were broken up by the Mexican goverment, the land was granted to Jose Antonio Estudillio ( 1842 ). In 1887 with the formation of the Lake Hemet Water Company and the Hemet Land Company by William F. Whittier ( the town of Whittier California is named after him ) and Edward L. Mayberry. Work on a masonry dam in the San Jacinto Mountains commenced in 1891, and the Hemet Dam was completed in 1895. About a year before Hemet began incorporated the Hemet Stock Farm was established by Mr. Whittier. Whittier used to have prospective buyers come out from Los Angeles and stay in his hotel and reace horses for their entertainment. The stock farm was also used in the filming of the movie Seabiscuit starring Tobey Macguire ( for about 3 seconds ). The following are the pics that I took today...
