The grassy area between the road and the sidewalk...

And are any of these illegal the search?

In my area they are city property so open to hunt. That said the property owners across from them take care of them so might be upset to see someone hunting there. I have hunted these areas with some success, although they are very trashy, but go to strips across from public buildings to avoid wrathful home-owners. My advice if there is a strip across from a house that looks good is to see if the folks in the house would mind, carefully reminding them that it is indeed city property. You never know, they might let you do their yard as well! If they seem doubtful I'd move on. Good luck, Russ

They can be as good as any yard. Especially in older neighborhoods. The downside is that most of the older ones have had some sort of disturbance to the soil when new streets were put in. I was detecting a yard of a house built in 1863 and only found deep memorial cents. I went to the boulevard and found a 1849 Seated dime only about an inch deep. I suspect that some digging had been done at some time in the past that brought that coin to the surface though.
What Russ said, applies to our town too. But detecting it without the homeowners permission may be asking for trouble.
