The Ugly

Head Teller informed me at one of my pickup banks her GM sent out emails to no longer order me anymore halves. She also took my SS number and said I would be "hearing" from someone shortly?? ??? :-\ So to add insult to injury they may try to put me on the terror watch list or something... I am slighty afraid..She also said "big" changes were coming to banks regulations and things. Something about the government???? I really hope my hobby isn't in jeopardy.

ya that was good bad and ugly alright. did u have to give them ur ss. i would want to know the reason before i hand that out. granted they probably have it on their system but im just a little cautious about that

Don't freak out too much dude. It could very well be a courtesy call to inform you they can no longer order. Or it could have been to scare you off from ordering or dumping there anymore.

CRH is very close to money laundering, and it could be possible they filed a SAR (Suspicious Activity Report). This would cause the government to audit you maybe, not an official audit, but they'll look at your finances to see if your making structured deposits, and trying to launder money. Since your coin roll hunting, the worst thing that could happen is they ask you to come in. You'll tell them your hunting for silver, and that will be the end of it. You can bring a lawyer to make sure they don't fuck you bigtime, but I would just tell them the truth. It's a perfectly lawful hobby. I bet there are several law enforcement officers on this forum that participate in this hobby as well.

I'm glad you posted this information because it's something I haven't given enough thought to. I wonder if this has to do with the so called Patriot Act.

I find this to be really disturbing information and I say that not just as a CRHer but as an American. It seems to be yet another example of the loss of freedom and liberty for American citizens and the ever increasing power, threat, intimidation and force used by the federal government.

I was planning to start increasing my CRHing budget and start ordering half boxes on a regular basis if I could. But if there is the possibility of being charged with terrorism by the federal government and/or being put on some terrorist watch list then the hell with it - I'll just stick to searching loose and cwr halves and nickels and cents. I enjoy this hobby but it is sure not worth the possibility of some type of federal prosecution (or persecution).

Good luck to you and please update us with more information regarding this matter.

HH (I hope)

I would have refused to give info without counsel present and to have this person who sent the e-mail call me to explain himself. I am assuming you have an account there and therefore the bank is accountable to you as a customer.

If you had an account there, they would already have access to that information. If it was a bank I did not have an account at and they asked me to give them my SS, I would have laughed in their face as I turned and headed out the door. They are a bank, not the police.

The problem is that financial institutions are required to report "suspicious activity" of their customers to the federal government and if the bank just has a name and maybe a phone # then the government can likely just use that info to find someone and/or get whatever further info they want about someone if they want to. Ironically this is supposed to somehow be "patriotic" and make us "safer" from terrorists. What the heck is patriotic about Americans losing more of their freedom and liberty's and being threatened, intimidated and terrorized by their own government?

The answer (obviously) - absolutely nothing.
