think reality is setting in . I actually found it ! I think deep down I never really expected to dig a US belt plate! I have hunted CW sites many times with great success and found the usual; dropped bullets, eagle buttons, parts of harmonicas and even gun parts. The only difference this time was this campsite was untouched, meaning it has remained untouched over the last 140 or so years. Subdivisions sprung up all around it, yet it survived somehow! My hunting buddy John and I had tried locating another site the previous week. On our way we drove by this site and we both thought it had possibilties . It was bordered by two old roads that came together and used by both US and CSA Troops. There was a spring, a large pasture with south facing gentle sloping ground. We went on to the other site and found a few bullets but that was about it (but that 's another story I posted it last week ) .

I met John near the site, we secured permission and began hunting around 2pm. We started on the side of the pasture near the spring. Two hours later we didn't have much to show for our efforts: a old metal toy car and a couple of rusty harness rings. Then John motioned me over, and with a big grin he showed me a fired 54 cal bullet. With renewed energy we coverd more ground. Then I got a loud signal and I knew my trusty XLT was on a large caliber bullet. I dug a nice drop, I called John over and we recoverd 7 or 8 dropped and fired bullets. John asked what the range was for this type weapon and we agreed it was probably around 150 yards . He went about that distance across the field. I worked in a circular motion towards him. In less then 5 minutes he was yelling for me to come that direction. The rest was a blur, with daylight running out we dug and dug dropped bullet after dropped bullet.

With the light fading fast all I had was the LED light on my White's Bull's-eye Pin pointer. My next signal was stronger so I knew it was larger than a bullet . I dug to about 7 inches and with my White's Bullseye LED light I could see the edge of my target. I went under it and carefully removed it . I could see the two puppy paws and what remained of the hook . I yelled at John that I thought I had found a belt plate . Again using the light from my White's Bullseye we could see the US!
I was so excited I couldn't even concentrate on anymore signals! John was also in a state of awe . Once again we realized we were on something special with only one problem, it was total darkness! As we made our way back to the truck my trusty White's Bullseye guided our path.

In about a hour or less we dug over 60 bullets, a US Plate and many other relics. John kept saying we found the field of dreams . I agree . It was a field of dreams! I always had a dream of recovering a US Belt Plate and the field of dreams along with a little help from my friend John, my XLT and my White's Bullseye Pinpointer made it happen. I will never leave home with out them! John and I can hardly wait to get back to the field of dreams. Happy hunting, and remember you to can find your field of dreams if you try. Tsgman

Fantastic finds guys. Love the belt plate. I know that you have both worked hard to find this place. Congrats. Its hard to look at these wonderful finds and then look outside where it is snowing with a 25 mph wind. Oh well, April is only 129 days away. Congrats again...Lance

Congrats on the buckle. That has to be a dream come true if you love civil war hunting. Nice display of pics and thanks for sharing them all. You guys are on the right path and I don't think this will be your last great find.

HH Jer

Thanks Lance, I hope you will get a day or two of hunting in soon. I have hunted many sites but they were hunted before and I always felt I was 20 years to late. Lots of great CW finds were made around here in the 70's. What I have learned is simple, dont stray to far from the original old roads in your area and hunt the sites that had water available because those spots were used over and over for many years. And thanks Jer, we are going back in the morning and I can't wait. I will post my finds. Thanks again, Tsgman.

Congrats guys! You're doing great, I'll have to catch up to your next posting after Turkey day. Looking forward to seeing what more you get.

Congrats tsgman! I'm glad you've realized your dream.

Kent
