Well, I thought i had my first cannonball the other day. But now, after talking with some experts and confirming some doubts myself, I don't think it is. It was found in an encampment area BUT...also in a quarry that has been actively mined since the 1870's. I think its a steel ball from one of the early era tumblers that crushed limestone. It's not perfectly round which would make sense smashing all that rock up. Its also 8 pounds, 7.8 to be exact. Apparently an 8 pounder was never used in the civil war although the confederate ordnance manual lists an 8 lb round. Oh well, I'll find a real one in the river this spring.

Found some more bullets today including a fired enfield that still has its wooden plug inside. Not sure what the button with S.K. on it is. Anyone know? Also included a couple shots of what I think might be the top piece to a shoulder epaulette. Its folder over on the end but the bottom has those three little waves. This look right to be one civil war folks?

Other couple pics are of lesser finds piled up. Enjoy!

Nice group of finds there. I would love to hunt a place like that.

Nice finds. You did find the top of the bowl from an epaulette. Can't help with the sk button.
