The "Crying" Game Pit!!!
Well you win some and you lose some in this game of Privy digging. We lost fairly big today with the percentage of broken bottles far outweighing the keepers. Although we did find a few keepers.
Started out with what we thought was just an ash pit as it went down around 4 feet before we even found anything. The first things we found were several bottles from the early 1900's. Don snapped up a cool applied crown beer from South Bend. I am sure a local collector will savor that little gem. I found the nice little candy dish or vase. Grabbed up a couple really nice medicine bottles as well.
Got down to the bottom of this pit at around 8-9 feet and it was ladder time. But wait......almost forgot to use the probe to check the base and perimeter of the pit to see if there was another one close by. Well it payed off as I probed to the north side and barely punched through and hit a ton of glass. There was another pit just 4 inches away from this one. I thought it was Christmas and just savored the moment when I broke through with my shovel. Like I said it was only four inches away with a wooden wall. The dirt fell away and I saw the pit was absolutely loaded with 1880's shards and bottles. I pulled out the huge casket flask( first cryer as it was blank)..Then I did grab up the amber drug bottle from Cincinnati Ohio for diseases of the lungs!
I was out of the pit and another digger(Terry) was in the pit for his turn. He started finding blob beer after blob beer...but every single one was broken And more Cryers were unearthed. One right after another. Whoever lived here back then smashed almost every bottle before throwing the pieces into the pit. Oh well, we were able to save a few keepers out of the depths. Went on to another house just down the alley and found a trash pit with some Hutch bottles and another embossed medicine. And thats all we could take for one day. A whole bunch of Cryin and a few smiles along the way. It was a beautiful day outside with friends and privies and we are going again tomorrow to scour the Earth for more glass. I took a few pics again and I hope you enjoy them all.
And may I be the first to say Thanks to all the Veterans out there that have surely fought for our freedom and kept us all safe here in the U.S.A. God Bless You All. jgas
