Guess it could be a piece of a deer tibia (lower leg).

In that case, it's connected to the front bumper and driver's side quarter panel of a 1972 Cadillac Deville.
(...in answer to the thread's title.)

Don't ask. >:(

(Stupid) Deer are a menace!

Anytime suspicious bones come into play (when you have a known Native American site) you need call the coroner, Historic Preservation Act, Clinton era. Regardless it looks like whatever bone it is, it had a major fracture and it probably was an artery sever as well, probably bled out quick.

Or it was cracked open to get at the marrow

Honestly, wouldn't think this bone is 'suspicious', although I thank you for the heads up! It is around a creek & a long time farm field, with no other bones around. I thought maybe a deer or even a tool..not sure how to guess age.

That bone looks relatively fresh, in other words, it has not been on the ground for decades.

I find deer bones in the woods fairly regularly, I suspect that is what you have found.

Good luck!

I agree with the deer but on top of that that kind of fracture pattern shows the bone was broken while it was still fresh look for butcher marks

A little more friendly advice... If you find bones and they are determined to be human remains, you WILL be suspect number one! A guy in my MD club found remains out in the woods years ago. Did "the right thing" and called the cops. He was suspect number one in the murder investigation until they found out enough to let him off the hook.

After that he said if he saw any bones he would simply turn and walk away.

Def not human but you guys are right finding human remains even if they are obviously ancient get treated as a murder investigation first then they work from there

Who else but the murderer would know where the bones were. I'd suspect him too. He knows too much to be Innocent. ~(.)(.)~

Came across a lot of data w/photos about the Hopewell-Nann site, about 15 miles from my treks...anyway , this photo , left bottom, 2nd up, is a tool used indoing the pelts/furs of animals...think it was as a scraper or sim ..anyway, I'm betting that's what I have, since quite a bit of items were preserved nicely, deep sandy bottoms! Ante Up!!! (My theory until getting it to a local university for examining, etc.)

I cant tell just by the photo but I find deer, bear and cattle bones all the time and the bears will eat bones and pumas will crack them. But I dont know what bone it is.

To anyone who is hesitant about calling the cops about finding a bone, then there must be something else you are worried about. If that was my family members bones, I would want someone to call regardless of how old it is. Any law enforcement or coroner with a lick of intelligence will deduce the proper intel. Hey if they do question you, you might have info, other stuff you found in the area that might lead to an arrest of the suspect, ID of the lost person (someone's son daughter father mother or ancestor). Won't you go to bed and sleep well that night knowing you did the right thing and didn't chicken out? Not an attack on anyone in general, just a call for integrity first, and a positive mote of light on our passions in MD'ing and treasure hunting.

I had a second cousin who was kidnapped and (presumed murdered), the suspect was eventually sent to prison on another charge. While inside he was ratted out by a cell mate for bragging about some murders. This eventually led to his admission of guilt on the murder (he had more than one on his rap), he lead the team out to the site, bones were littered all over in a very disrespectful way. When in doubt ask or speak up.

I wouldn't hesitate to turn in either. And if you know you didn't kill someone and put'em there then what are you worried about...? Now, me being me I wouldn't give a damn what any cop or law agency thought.

P.Allen. .I am right beside you, all the way, with your opinions. Concerning calling out the big dogs when bones, or suspicious iems/events are in your hands...anyway, Sorry about your cousin. No one deserves their lives snuffed out early! I feel you are worried, and I get it. But do know. This bone is animal & I am a advocate of the disappearing old homestead cemeteries & the ones that are left to disintegrate & no one cares. So dear friend, no worries here. Thanks for noting these for others, we all need to be educated n updated at times, I know I do!!! Take care, K.~

Here, bones last a long time in the desert. Seems I'm gifted by a bone of some type when I go out adventurizing.
Coyote, horse, or some that look fairly familiar. Bringing them home seems weird to some but I'm curious of the
skeleton armature we're made of. This is one of my fireplaces at Christmas.
