There’s a big field near my job that I’ve now hunted twice after wondering many times what might be there. No evidence of old structures or roads, not even from aerial images dating back to 1964. [I’m going to see if I can get my hands on 1928 aerial images from the area. San Diego had a series of aerial images taken in ‘28, which is impressive, considering that Kitty Hawk was only 25 years earlier.]. There are a few footpaths and some old ranch fence posts with barbed wire, which you can find in almost any open area of S.D. Anyway, I’ve hunted this once solo at night and once after work with my co-worker Bill.
The first hunt yielded a vintage copper powder puff compact, with makeup still inside of it. You can see for yourself that it is a quite pretty piece. This same hunt also yielded the metal caps and porcelain inserts of several mason jars, the ‘Boyd’s’ variety. A little research on Boyd’s indicates the jars were made between 1900 and 1909 in Indiana. I also found a 1918 – (D?) wheat, pretty worn. Also a metal ring that has a beginning patent date of ‘Aug. 97’ and an end date of ‘Jan. 1911’.
The second hunt was just as interesting. A corroded aluminum “Del Monte Cigar Stand Good for 5¢ In Trade’ token, a bath house token, and old (circa 1930s) French Veolay Paris lipstick(?) cap [I found one identical on eBay], and an old Bayer aspirin cap. The mason jar lids keep coming too, though I haven’t found any of the glass jars. Also, an abundance of 12 gauge shells.
My buddy Bill thinks we’ve stumbled upon a dump site, based on the variety of objects and how scattered they are across this field. I’m going back (obviously) later this week and will let you know if I find any more interesting stuff.
