Whites Spectrum XLT and I love it.
I have been working this old homestead not far from me since summer. In fact it is the only place I have hunted since I got permission. Well today it turned out to be the gift that keeps on giving. After hunting for about an hour I noticed this blonde hair kid watching me and he waved so I called him over. It turns out that Derrick is related to the family that had the old homestead. As we went around the property I told him he could have every other target we dug. Well his first was a 1952 wheat back and he thought it was "pretty sweet" I knew I liked this kid when I told him I found a WW2 Dog Tag from one of his relatives and his response with genuine awe was "that is so cool". It then started to rain so I decided to pack up. It only rained a little bit so I went back at it and noticed him looking out the window with his Dad. (he live next door) So I waved him over. I asked him where he thought we should look and he made a recommendation that promptly gave up a nice Sterling Silver Ring with an oval turquoise mounted in it. He told me we could tell if it was silver if I could find a mark on it, I told him you're pretty smart, to which he replied, and I quote, "I've been around 14 years". It was great. I kept that one and told him the next target is his no matter what. Well out popped a beauty 1940 Mercury. I pinpointed and told him to get it and as he was rubbing off the wet dirt he couldn't believe his eyes, it was the first Mercury Head dime he ever saw. I have an old metal detector that was given to me, I think I will see if I can get it working and give it to him. The finds were great, but seeing a young guy like Derrick get excited about metal detecting was priceless.

Lovely story. Thanks for sharing and for spreading this hobby to one more youth. It's like spreading seeds, they will grow and more history will be saved.

HH! :icon_thumright:

What a nice thing to do you did!

Great finds and even better story Steve! Very kind of you!

Thats a very nice story and a nice thing you did for that boy. I bet he will never forget it. I got my two boys a set of ace 350's and they could care less about detecting........sigh

Great story! Always pleased to hear someone introducing the next generation! KUDOS TO YOU!

Kinda of like the pusher man; first one's free. What can I say though, I like to share my obsessions too.

Nice work! I get mobbed by kids as I'm sure we all do on occasion. Convincing the kid to do your group hunt door knocking is your next priority! Who turns down a kid? Lol

I have ALWAYS tried to be kind to the curious spectator that we collect along the way and especially so to the kids. But, it can be tough.
I had one in particular who was about 13-14 but was trying to act all innocent. Kept trying to see in my pouch to see what was there, (in the "trash" pouch, but he didn't know that LOL ) Anyway, I dig and as soon as the hole was open he'd dive his lil fingers in and grab a handful of dirt saying, I SEE IT!. Even though he hadn't because I hadn't got down to it yet. :) UNTIL....one time he started toy grab and I picked that exact moment to chop through a root! (Along side the hole of course. LOL I'd looked like I wasn't paying attention and when I looked back at him I said OH MY GOODNESS! Were you in there?!? Did I cut you!?!?! ;) I didn't and wouldn't, but, ya know, from then on he sort of, um, er, waited until I lifted the find out. :)

I'm glad to see a youngster helped to know the worth of history. Thanks!

Yes sir, good story. It's fun with kids, brings the excitement that we once had back, at least it does for me.
