Hi everyone, I live in a small town that is very md friendly so I'm lucky there. But these traveling groups are getting crazy around here. Went to the fairgrounds on Monday to clean up after the fair and there's 40 plus people there and not one from my town. They traveled 45 minutes to come here and md from Cleveland area! So went to the park and was sick as soon as I pull in, the ground looked like the golf corse in caddy shack after bill Murray and the golpher got done with it, I was pissed! So CW home and the group is at a school across the road from me, same thing ground tore up, I'm talking some holes a foot deep. Why that deep? Asked if they've been finding anything said some clad and pop slaw, hehe I leave that pop slaw just for jack off people like that lol. Anyways eat dinner head back out to the high school meet another group from Columbus area doing the same thing. Does anyone else living in small friendly cities have this same problem? I'm afraid their going to ruin it for me expecially when I seem the first group at a local soccer field and their also on the surrounding private property. I hope no kids get hurt because the playing field is tore up. I spent the rest of the day and the next morning fixing holes and watering the broken grass now I'm just hopeing no one gets pissed. Anyone have any ideas these people have been tearing my town up over the last month. That and a new guy I've been seeing lately also, he was MDing a tire down house dirt pile from the sidewalk that his coil barely got to. What should I do? I usually mind my own business but this is getting bad.

Only thing I can say is do what I have done. I had some noobs or jack A's that hit my little town and the local park and left holes, not left them ugly but left the holes unfilled and the trash sitting next to it or in it. I had cleaned up several not wanting to risk losing my hunting grounds and finally had the run in with them. Now, I'm 6'1" and 270 so it helps to make my point when you stand over someone and I made it very clear what they were doing was going to cause me problems which means I will cause them problems, they got my point and left never to be seen again.
Your case is a little different, you have a large group but again its just how you carry yourself-tell them that you have seen some absolute disgraceful showing of what it means to be a detectorist. Ask them if they would like a large group coming into their area and leaving holes and trash around..tell them its easy for them to come in and do this because they leave and don't have to worry about the consequences like you do and that it isn't fair for you to have to hear about what they've done and then the fingers point at you. Be tactful but be straight forward. Do your best john wayne impersonation as far as attitude. I don't put up with that crap in my neck of the woods, nor on the club hunts and you shouldn't either. There's my 2 cents plus a few more.

My town requires a permit, your may too. You can bet they didnt have a permit to dig. Just throwing a idea out there.

I had to look where you were From :tongue3:
The local Fair ended last weekend, I put off going there yet,
mainly because this year was the 140th year,
and there is plenty to go around.

Plus I think next weekend there is a Large consignment auction there, so as fast as the fair
people leave, Consignments may be being dropped off.

although I have come across a few open holes over the years,
I can't say we are being overrun by hordes.

The 158th Annual Bloomsburg Fair ends tonight,
I wouldn't mind hunting there, But I think they are a bit elitist‎,
and unless you know someone you can't even do the parking fields.

Should of watched them and saw which one(s) were doing the damage and told them to go back and fix the place. Or go up and interview him on film and tell him or you'll post the video on YouTube and treasure websites.
I respect you guys who go around and clean up after these jackasses, but if I caught them in the act it wouldn't be pretty.

yeah, as much as we all enjoy buddy-ing up to hunt with others (no fun "hunting alone"), yet strangely, md'ing is one of those odd hobbies, where the less people that do it, the better. You know: Like no one every notices a single person or two at the fairgrounds, beach, park, etc.... md'ing. Right? But guaranteed: if you put 20 md'rs on that SAME patch of park, beach, etc... Guess what will happen? THEN passerbys notice, and start asking themselves: "gee what are those guys doing? Gee I wonder if it will cause any harm? Gee I wonder if we need to make rules?", etc.... Thus yes, the less md'rs, the better.

Same for fishing I suppose: If a single fisherman or two finds a good honey-hole trout spot in a river, they'll be fine. But if 10 fishermen show up to hunt the SAME good hole, guess what? : the hole is no longer good anymore. Same sort of point-of-dimishing returns.

Guess I don't realize how good I have it here in my little Montana Podunk town. I have never seen another MDer in my town parks. They have been hunted and I do know of a very few MDer that live here but I seem to be the " Lone Detector " here. Funny how when I started this hobby that I thought that nobody ever did any detecting before I did but I am always hearing of how many others did it and have either died or just quit for what ever reasons.

The two guys from the " Diggers " TV show live in my town so I know they along with others hit this area pretty hard for the last 10+ years or so before they went big time. They go to the school and do talks on metal detecting along with lots of other community work. When ever I find something in my town I always think Ha Ha the " Diggers " missed this treasure. Hey, If they can make a living doing their hobby I say more power to them. Now they are on the road a lot doing the show I can have the whole area to myself.

Yeah I love this hobby, heck it's the only one I do anymore. I use to hunt and fish but ever since all the TV shows hit the air those hobbies are over ran now also lol. Use to be you wore camo you'd get funny looks from people now its a fashion statement!!

Everyone has a right to do what they want but man quit tearing stuff up ya know. I forgot to mention why it was making me angry, I would go over holes and pick out quarters and all kinds of change, so I know these guys were only "money" hunting nothing else. Just like 2 weeks ago went to the swimming pool at a park and MDing around it. I found around 10 plug flaps before it got dark. Only one didnt have money laying in it. Heck one had a roll of quarters in it!!! Why leave that? Because they were only looking for rings lol. Good luck everyone and keep swinging.

Ok I thought I recognized that FG but its not mine it's wood county I think. Also could you contact me with a pm if your a mod I'm having problems sending pms and editing my profile. Thank you.

It's easy to be an internet badass, but tougher to do it irl. But if it's your turf, it's your turf and you gotta protect it. In times like these, I always ask myself: WWJD? (What Would Josey Do?... Josey Wales, that is :laughing7:)

I can understand somebody being pissed about others md'in on their own property, but the rest is a free for all, ya just have to deal with it...that's how it is...it pisses me off to see where others have been, but I try to fix the holes made by others, just so it doesn't give our sport a worse look than it already has, and I understand, I find that most guys want to leave the ground looking untouched but just haven't got it down yet, when I first started mine were bad, so bad that I had friends tell me I couldn't detect any more in their yards....now I get almost as much pleasure leaving areas ive been looking untouched as I do with a good find. I really wouldn't go to a fairgrounds after a fair, ya just know a bunch of beginners happy to find clad are going to be there digging sloppy holes...

I never said they didn't have a right to be there. Public land is public, heck that's all I hunt. It's the point of it. If you didnt notice I said they were out of towners. So they are screwing up my areas. If they keep it up I won't have those public places anymore. Then ill have to come to another town just to md, if you don't respect where you live enough not to screw it up there, then you won't respect the land somewhere else. That's why they had to travel here, they told me where they were from they had a strict no md policy and couldn't find anywhere to private land hunt. See what I mean now, that's why I'm upset, there's only a handful of us here that md, and we respect the land, because we enjoy using it.

I always try to treat others land as I would my own even in the woods . That reminds me I've always wanted to ride a Dirt Bike on a Golf Course .lol

I have done the fairgrounds in Bloomsburg. We detected about a 30x10 area and already pulled about $5.00 worth of current-era coins.
