Think I might dig me a hole!! Did you use an artifact detector? Yours is big, but doesn't have the use that mine does!!

Nice find brother!! I'll trade!!

Wow... thanks for posting that one. Looking forward to seeing what else you come up with from your new spot. I can see why you're excited. Good title for the post.

That is nice! Every one of those that I have found here in Georgia (which ain't a lot -> 3) has severe damage. That would be a center piece down here. Congratulations on finding one in that good of shape.

Being serious now, do I just pick the best corner of my best field and start to dig? Always wanted to dig, but figured I would have to dig a moon crater. How do you determine. When should I call quits on a small spot? 1 foot 2,3 feet???

I don't really dig in fields per say I go into logging clearcuts and find sites above creeks. I'll walk them out, and usually a single clearcut that produces will have several sites, usually it seems there was a main site and some lesser sites and then what I call lookout sites where you only find a small amount usually on the ridges. These main sites will usually let you know if its worth digging by the amount of flint on the surface after a few rains after the dozers finish up. If there are large amounts or some even lesser amounts I'll dig in and see how much debitage comes up. If its enough to keep me interested I'll keep digging...say a flake every 3 minutes or less anything less than about that average I get bored pretty soon and give up unless I had made some good finds then that will keep me persistent on a site thats not putting out much flint. I've gotten into spots probably debitage pits where there is more flint pouring out than there is dirt. You should call it quits when you dont find flint more than a pc every 5-10 minutes i mean that wold wear someone out and probably the chances of finding stuff before your arm wore out would pretty low.

I really appreciate that SOHIO. I know of a perfect place. I think I'll start this weekend. It is a bank leading up to a field. Heavy erosion has caused a straight drop, and every rain I find some pretty nice stuff. I think I'll kinda strip mine that bank. Does that sound like a good idea? The way I see it is, I'll get to any thing before erosion eats it up. No leg breaking holes left behind, and it's my land. Heck, I might just go the easy rout! TNT!!! The neighbors love the mushroom clouds of dirt!! Only kidding. TNT is destructive to artifacts. Hand grenades??? Hummm??

If you find material there on the surface on a regular basis that should be a great spot. From what you described it sounds like you can come in at an angle to the layers of soil. Pay attention to the soil that holds the most material.you will want to open your hole horizontaly to expose it.

It is one of my better archaic spots. 75% of my collection probably came from that one long bank. One corner is really awesome. I think I'll do well as long as I pay close attention. We shall find out, probably tomorrow afternoon!! Thanks fellas!

Good luck.. I'm excited for you. It sounds like you will do real well.

Come on up! I'm not used to saying " up". Normally come on down. Any way, I have another shovel! LOL! I have taken a garden rake and scraped the sides of this bank once. The ground was pretty well frozen at the time and I still found a savannah river stem. So I'm pretty confident. I also know where a couple of dry creek beds are within walking distance.

I'll be up that way this spring. Stay in touch.
