I had always wanted a md when I was young but never got one,and so it wasn't until my wife lost her ring supposedly in the yard she bought me a cheapy that only dug trash. It was like 69.00 or something. We found the ring alright 3 years later under the washing machine.Yeah right, like I was supposed to believe that she was actually working in the yard.To make a longer story much shorter I was intriged when I was web hunting and found you guys.I quickly signed up and have learned tons in just 6 or seven hours here.
I usually do a lot of research on areas to go fishing not metal dec. as I live in Florida and we grouper fish alot.I find it very similar.I go to Terraserver.com a lot to find new areas to fish.If some of you have not been there to use a a way to search topographically it is a neat site to help all you search for new spots to hunt.I have not even bought a new dectector yet but still waiting on catalogs and hunting this site for info on the different ones.I was looking at the 2500 from Garrett and also the DMX from Whites.Dealers please don't respond to this portion as I want unbiased opinions.Any ideas about these?Primarily going to be hunting some plantations,a couple of old ghost towns and a beach or two and quite a few old indian sites around her. Would one of these be a decent crossover to salty ground.
Are some of you hooked to the research as well as the actuall md'ing?I find this terribly fascinating and see this be a very serious addiction. On a site I am a member on about fishing my avitar or signature says"Hello my name is Brian,Iam addicted to fishing,it's been 2 days now and already I am beginning to feel shaky",I can see I am going to need to modify that once I get a md.
Sorry to write such a long story but just wanted to say thanks instead of always asking questions.
Can't wait to get one and tell a tale of the one coin that didn't get away.

My name is Brian,I don't even own a md and already Im begining to shake.
(or maybe)
My wife said if I go md'ing one more time she is going to divorce me.Dang, I'm going to miss her.

You mean she hasn't left you over your fishing habit yet? ??? Well she'll probably keep you a while longer.....maybe long enough for you to find her a great ring! ;D Glad to meet you Brian! Can't wait to see what you find!

Nana ;)

And it's cheaper than fishing too.All you have is the initial investment in the machine,and batteries and digging tools and sand scoops and gas and back-up detectors and oh well,omni's right ;

She will be much happier cleaning your rings than cleaning your fish! ;)

Brian...

Are you sure you want to be a detectorist? LOL....

And I ask this in all seriousness... The reason I ask, is you've listed 2 top of the line detectors for your first machine... And that's not a bad thing, but it could sure be expensive if you tried it and decided you didn't like it... I see expensive detectors for sale at a loss far too often. I'm sure these same people had the same intentions as you, at one time... Big dreams of finding gold rings with every swing of the coil, finding gold coins when digging for those rings and the mother lode when the readout swears it's a pulltab...

Just some words of advice my friend... start out cheap and upgrade when you decide whether or not you're going to like it enough to drop a thousand greenbacks on it... And you can always sell your entry level detector if you decide you want to upgrade or just give up completely... LOL

Either way... Welcome to T-net, we hope you stick around and post some finds... ;D

Gold Digger,I already own a piece of crap(cheap one)my wife bought some years back.Trust me I'll like it.I am a die-hard saltwater maniac, fishing, spearfishing.Ive sharktooth hunted and dug arrowheads since I was a kid.I love exploring.Even if I only find pop tops it will get me outside. This is right up my alley. When I start a hobby I always try to get the best or close to it.Why try to master a piece of crap?Know if I could only find a good price on a new xlt.

Welcome to MDing. The hobby where anything that you find is a treasure.

You definately came to the right site to get your questions answered. Everyone here is fantastic and will do anything to help you out.

Best of luck in your search for a MDer.

Good Luck and Happy Hunting,

Not recommending any brand over another because I have not used all of them. But.....you knew that was coming didn't you? I have kept a running journal regarding my almost new Garrett GTI 2500 Pro. It is listed under this topic (Metal Detecting). Take a look if you want to see what I have been learning about it through the past several weeks. I don't think you can go wrong if you buy a top of the line detector made by any of the U.S. manufacturers. Just be sure you don't get a detector designed for a specific purpose such as water hunting if you don't intend to do much water hunting, etc. JIM
