thanks for help,still puzzled

first off I would like to thank gary for his advise,went out this morning and tried againand dug every hit I had,i did find a 74 Lincoln at about 6 inches deep,but what has me puzzled is that all the hits I get come up penny ring or knickel ring and when I dig I still come up empty,what am I doing wrong?
