Mine is:

Practice and practice with your MD and become familiar with its settings and various signal tones. Place a number of different targets (clad, silver, rings, pull tabs and bottle caps) in your back yard (no digging necessary) and characterize the various sounds and readings.

Go to a local park, school, demo site and practice what you have learned. Try a tot lot for easy digging at first.

Don't forget one of the most important tools that a MD has... That's research. Try city libraries, the WWW internet and word of mouth.
