I headed out early to the grove where I found my big Ben last week, joining the guy practicing his clarinet and the professional aluminum can retractor who was working the garbage cans after the weekend picnics. I think I fit right in, because I have an instrument I'm learning to play, and I find a lot of aluminum, too!
Found a couple of wheats when Bob called - "Did you get my PM?" "No, I haven't been on line today." "I was inviting you to join me at the parkway tearouts." "Cool - I'm going to hit old balding Ben's grove for a bit, then I'll probably join you." About twenty minutes later, the phone rang again, and I could see it was Bob and knew he would only be calling back so soon if he had news of a find, so I said, "Hi Bob, what did you find?" He said he found a silver Rosie - so I got in the car and headed over to give him some backup!
Well, within a half of an hour, I got a 52 George - the same year old balding Ben was, so I thought "Yeah, this was meant to be!" Within the next hour, I pulled up a '43 and a '45 Merc, and a '63 Rosie. After a lull in the non-penny action, I picked up a '16 buffalo, a Wilmette beach license tag from '39, and a '41 George. All told I found 17 wheats and about a buck fifty in clad.
I also got my first real trade token - from Nick's Grocery & Meat Market, 959 N. Leavitt St.! Yeah!!!
While I was hunting, I ran into an old timer walking by who wouldn't believe me when I said I was looking for money. "I think you're bullsh!tting me. You must be looking for a gas line or something..." I could not convince him that we were out looking for coins, no matter what I said. Even after showing him my finds, he said I probably came across those while I was looking for a gas line. I finally gave up and said that I had to get back to looking for the gas line. He asked me what I was going to do with it when I found it. I said "I don't know - I'm not really looking for one - I told you I'm looking for old coins!" He just kept his bewildered look on his face for a while, then tottered off. He's probably still wondering about the strange guy from the gas company...
This is only my second five silver day, and five is my highest daily total ever. I have Bob to thank for the invitation to join him! Oh, and he got a little even for the raccoon stunt, with a sneak-up job of his own!
