I looks to be a 2 piece button front back, it measures just over 7/8", there is writing on the back but it is covered in crud for now...
Thanks TnT

The back of the button looks to say WATERBURY and something else.

The star with the word Texas around it was the star used in the original Republic of Texas flag:

I'm guessing your button is based on that. Don't know the age or value, though. I'm behind schedule, but I've been working on a way to capitalize on Texas nationalism: http://www.occupiedtexas.com

TNT, Let me know what it says on the back when you can read it. Nice button. Tony

Yup... clean the back up and see what is says, then let us know... THAT will be the key to identification.

Think I can narrow it down to one of the following:

If the back mark is "Steele & Johnson/Waterbury" you have a button made from 1858-1875 and it is relatively rare(RV 25 according to Albert's), but not as rare as the one posted earlier.

If the back mark is Scoville/Waterbury or Waterbury Button Co., you have a post CW button which isn't very rare(RV 2) at all.

Either way a very nice button!!

A lot of reproduction Texas buttons have been made. I own a few that I bought while CW reenacting. If it was found in a location that a CW reenactment occurred then I would suspect that is your answer.

Texas military units have used that type of button in the past, including the CW era.
