Any thoughts on what this could be about please?

Sorry chaps, I should have known to do this.

On the back it says:

HUGUENIN

I'm not sure that seller of the above item has it quite right. The cross appears on this company's other pins, and may be from the Swiss flag, as the company is Swiss. Here's a variation, for consideration: Avecan Ltd: Sport pin Skiing Switzerland I Test International

May be a case of the blind leading the blind here. I really can't find any substantiating documents to back either theory. That is why I said it "may help" because I couldn't find anything else to support the claim. Nor can I find anything to support the claim of the of the Swiss International pin, although I have to admit, I haven't spent oodles of time researching it either.

Agreed, just exploratory thoughts so far. Your ID's are often spot-on MudHut, so noting your wording I tried to word mine with similar intent.

I think it is safe to say both MudHut and Benz are correct, and I feel there are probably other groups/organizations that also use the same logo for their test merit pins. The Huguenin Company makes medals, trophies, insignia, decorations, etc., and like many other companies uses the same form/mold for different companies and organizations. An example of this would be high school class rings; most looks identical in style, but have different dates and names.
Huguenin ? Haut Médailleur depuis 1868: Home

Knowing where the OP found the pin. what other items were found in the same area, and the history of the area would help to narrow down what organization used this test pin. Like most 'What Is It' items, I personally go with the more obvious than the more rare, so I would say Boy or Girl Scouts is more likely than Switzerland Skiing, if it were found in 'my' area of NC.

WELCOME to the forum!
Neat find :)

That's a perfect ID! It's always nice to get the info from someone who knows from first hand experience exactly what something was awarded for.

Good Job on the ID .. as nhbenz said with regards to the boy scout pin suggestion, "I'm not sure that seller of the above item has it quite right." .. Obviously not .. LoL!
