Pretty simple idea,
I got to thinking about how important it is to have a test bed for familiarizing yourself with a new machine, So instead of going thru the hassle of digging up the back yard i would just head to Homedepot and purchase some sod.
It's easy to take care of, just water and there you have it.Stack as many pieces on top and let your detector tell you when it's enough.
Actually i haven't tried it yet as I'm still trying to figure out what detector to get.

This will give you an unfair test. The targets need to be buried in the ground matrix to get the proper readings. The sod is more like an air test.

You don't need to dig up the back yard. First get an area that is free of iorn. This is the most difficult task and you may need to dig a little to accomplish this.

The easiest way to put the coins at the exact depths is to mark a "pole" with inch markings. Push the pole til 6" mark is lined up with top of dirt. Pull pole out and drop coin down "shaft". This would be for your six inch coin or coins. Then fill hole an inch at a time packing dirt tightly as you go. Very simple.

I agree - skip the sod idea.
