Wow thats something I've got a drift mine on my property in an old tertiary channel but i haven't sampled in the mine yet. I have been digging in the channel on other side of the creek but i haven't found any gold yet and I'm about 4 feet down is that usual that the gold is only in the bottom layers?

The gold will be where it is.Check the mining reports for your county. Some channels have multiple layers, alternating between gravel, ash, cobbles, boulders, any and all of the above. Some are 4-5 hundred feet deep in spots and a mile wide. Not all channels are rich or have big gold. Some were robbed of later intersecting channels.Mostly the bestb paystreaks were worked and the rims(banks and high banks ignored, unless paying gravel was found.....and then there are veins and stringers in most channels were rarely worked unless easy highgrade was found. You might sample these if you can get on the bedrock in that drift.there are many variables in the above info, depending on your county and what channel it is.Lot's of channels were faulted.I'm in Calaveras where there are numerous tertiary channels, about 991/2% on private ground. All of these were worked extensively with varying degrees of success. Some channels made vast inches of water and may remain flooded or contain poisanous gases due to the pyrites and sulfides soaking and being leached out with little or no ventilation.Lot's of info on your mine if you research it.If your in Calaveras/Tuolomne counties I can provide a little info.the northern counties I've given the books and reports away.......Dave.

Up here in Shasta County we have some amazing huge paying layers. All along the Sacramento River there are drifts into the volcano flow capped layers of gravels. At Slate Creek you go under the freeway and can hear the trucks rumble over your head. Righteous gold BUT have been cracked on the hardhat a few tooo many times and rocks fall ALL THE TIME. Neck and shoulders won't take it, not to mention a old dog has to learn to be more careful as I don't run nearly as good as I used to. tons a au 2 u 2-John
