Went in to one of my dump banks today and got a surprise. One of the tellers comes running up and hands me the tiniest and thinnest coin and asks what is it? I look at it closely and recognize it as a AG4 or so three cent Trime. It was hard to see without a loop but it looked ok. She asked what it was worth and I said I wasn't sure but at least a $10. She said I could keep it and smiled and walked away. I couldn't see the date at the time without reading glasses so it could have been worth most anything and my guess of $10 wasn't too far off the mark. It was an 1853 - one of the more common dates. Not a bad day and I can check off another from my list of finds from CRH! Maybe I'll post a photo of it when I get a chance. Sometimes you find the strangest things when you go out searching and dang if it doesn't always seems to come when you least expect it!

Just when you think you've heard it all from banks! How does this happen?!?

Today's the day! ~Mel Fisher

Not sure on the composition and the years offhand- nickel or silver?

That's a great save! I bought a "trime" for my personal collection also, they are neat!

It is the silver one. It is so thin and small. I was curious and checked my records and I got a nickel three cent coin in 2009. That one also came from a teller but that time she had a bag of odd coins including a Peace dollar, Buffalo nickel and a couple foreign coins. The nickel coin was in better shape, almost uncirculated. I have a US type-set collection and a foreign coin collection all gathered from CRH. They are kept in three-ring binders in 2X2's. It keeps the hobby interesting. Here are a couple images I borrowed from ebay which are pretty close to the condition of the coin found. These might be slightly better. You can't really believe how small they are until you hold one.

Sweet find. Wonder how the teller got it?? People must've lost those like crazy back in the day. Very small indeed.

You should find out when she is working and send her a nice bottle of wine or gift of that nature!
A gesture that kind deserves something just as nice in return :occasion14:

I too got a 3-cent (nickel) piece about 2-years ago, but it came out of a dime box. Great find none the less. HH

Yes they are small thin coins. I found a couple over the years with my metal detector and each time I thought I found part of an aluminum can or other scrap. Cool that you got one from a teller - congrats.

Ditto. It wasn't worth much but it's one of my favorite roll finds. I think mine is an 1884.
