Have any of you ever swept an old factory??? I pass by 6 or 8 factories that have been torn down and the lots have been cleared for all of the big debris, and kind of leveled. I was wondering it would be worth sweeping the area??? What's happening is a lot of old factories are being torn down and multi story condo buildings are going up in there place.

What I'm wondering is, when they teardown the building and level the ground, wouldn't a lot of scrap metal be thrown around??? and any coins be buried even deeper, or is it still worth a check????

Any helps would be appreciated...

the main thing about teardowns is permission and i'm talking about geting it from the owners, the true owners not the paperboy, neighbors, gardeners or some guys working on the house

Any demo site is the responsibility of the site boss while he's there, and they are often okay as long as you are not there while they are working. Done a few of them while the guys were on lunch and breaks and few others following the cat around right ahead of the press and gravel fill.

The oldest park in this town had some work being done a few years back and was fenced off, but I walked in at lunch time and told them I wanted to go after the coinage, they were good with it until the city engineer arrived. He yelled at me, I yelled back and he dropped it there. The crew and site boss liked me more than the engineer they were working with and invited me to stay on until they were done. Got a couple keepers there and spent the whole next day in there with the crew as alomst all the ground there was being dug and turned. At another site here the city engineer was really interested in my finds and never argued.

Toss a coin and always ask while they're sitting down eating, never while they're working. Or just stand outside that fence and look on knowing what's being re-buried out of reach or removed altogether. Lastly, NEVER call first if you can ask in person. ANYWHERE

Unless you're butt-ugly, scary, wearing scales and carrying beer.

i was at a teardown couple weeks ago, foreman said yes, everythings fine untill the "owners"came by and told me no and the gave the foreman a hardtime cause he was working for them and couldn't and shouldn't be giving permission

busted? nope not at all.did the right thing and asked, felt bad for the foreman tho,he stood 6-5 easy,250 plus getting chewed out by a gram ma weighing in at 100#.gram even came up to me(nice as ya please) and said she didn't want me to hurt myself by tripping over the crap they had laying around :P

you bet i was there but i do recall just staying OUTSIDE the house and not going in,who was that that actually went in and came out with board games?.........and then last time we were there the cops did say it was okay, one even came out and tried out my dfx

Well the ones by me are all torn down, and are just vacant lots. No telephone #'s to call, and nobody working there to ask, all of the work was done months ago. I was wondering if I should just go and hunt them without worring about asking. There is no easy way of finding out who ownes the lots, and they are just sitting there. building is gone, the parking lots are gone, just empty fields that will be turned into condos once the housing market turns around.

Are any parts of it municiapal or city owned? lemme know, I'll go with you for that kind of stuff! And 100 homes!?! Whoa!! Any way to get in to do some pre-demo inspections? Info, please. Who's developing the property, who's doing the demo's, etc. etc.

I met two guys in Elgin that did home demos and each bought new Ram trucks with the cash they found at one home site alone.
Possible sources: Drug money? Miserly old folk? Crazy paper-boy stash?
Who cares? If it's there before it's torn down, it's gone afterward. Need to take a stab at it.

That would mean the hospital board is in charge. Hospital boards are notoriously negative to anything outside of increased medical costs. I know that from working a similar site here in Elgin. But in that case, one of the members and doc who lived on adjoining property saw me working the parkway outside the demo site(s) and told me it was okay with him. But I took the time to talk with him enthusiastically and he responded well.

Had he been in the office and I called, I am sure there would be a distinct "No" but likewise I didn't hit the site until he said he didn't mind. Sometimes you just gotta stalk a site hoping for an opening.

Damn, I gotta find time to go out with y'all. Sounds like there never is a dull moment, from backed in cars to board games to the cops. I dont have that much fun in Gary when I hunt, even when GOIO goes with me. LOL. TMAN...
