TDI vs Whites surf PI DF

AuDuke,

The TDI, in pure PI mode ( ie, ground balance OFF ), will be just as good if not better than the DF. The thing that puts it over the top, is the ability to use the ground balance feature as a type of discriminator to eliminate iron. You CAN coin shoot with it via setting up the GB and using the conductivity switch. Granted when setting the unit up that way, the ability to get gold and nickels is also eliminated ( that is, when you set it up to totally eliminate iron and low conductive targets), but you can silver/copper hunt in iron laden areas with no problem. Depth suffers a bit in that mode, but that is compared to the pure PI mode. One good thing is, in that mode, it can also eliminate a lot of the beat up zinc pennies that ID/hit in the gold range.

In addition, there are a lot of coil options for it.

The only downside is...it's not waterproof. So if you are going to be hunting a lot of salt water beaches and wading into the surf, I suggest the DF for the simple fact that you can give it a fresh water bath after hunting without any worries. And you don't have to worry about that rouge wave coming up and soaking the unit and potentially frying it.

I just like using water proof units when hunting salt water beaches....the salt air, spray and sand always end up on the unit. The only non-waterproof unit that I use in the wet sand and suds is a CZ6a, but it's water resistant.

If I were hunting with the TDI, I would make sure to cover it up with some type of cover or plastic bag.

Thanx JC; I have a TDI and yes it does have some disc. capabilities and has good depth with the GB turned off and I wouldn't want to use it in the surf. I was wondering if the surf DF had the same depth capabilities. I am not interested in digging anything except gold jewelry, (I know that's not possible)
so with the TDI I wouldn't have to dig dimes & quarters and maybe zinc Penny's. To bad they don't make a water proof TDI.

The problem with those darn zinc pennies in the salt water, is they get all corroded, beat up and even break, causing a lot of them to signal as a lower conductor. Lots of em sound like gold !

I don't think you will go wrong with a DF or other water proof PI. You are used to how they work anyway.

Not sure if you are in the market for a new one or used waterproof PI, but I am going to put up my spare Infinium with stock and 8 inch mono coils for sale at a really good price. It's like new and never been underwater.

The Infinium is a little bit of a different animal, but a H--L of a great salt water detector once you tune it. I just have too many detectors and since I have 2 Infiniums, I figure I can part with one of them.

JC; I had a Infininum and it was a little heavy for me out of the water, I have been thinking about a Detector Pro pulse. Am not going to need one until spring so I got time to decide

I had a chance to use a Headhunter PI for only one day and liked it. I especially liked the light weight and my only concern was learning it. However I only had a chance to use it in fresh water so with not having any salt to mess things up I have no idea how it works at a real beach. I did find one small gold chain with it though.

Construction of the whole Headhunter range has been improved in the last few years so check the date if you think of buying secondhand.

The main problem you will have is the choice of coil size.
Large coil will give great depth but not get very small items/gold chains. Small coil will, but the depth will be less than the D.F.

I have a D.F. among several pulse machines but I can't say I like it. Depth is not extreme especially if there's black sand. I don't like the coil (sorry Eric) or the lack of an adjustable SAT speed.

As always, best to try before you buy if you can.
