Hi all, Sheep runs were here before gold mining. In the early days there was no meat exporting and what the locals didn,t eat, was boiled to get the fat .Used for candles. When gold was discovered there was a sudden increased demand for such products. Great fortunes were made from the sale of salted mutton and candles. On the site i have been working in recent weeks is a old tallow works which dates from around 1840. Candles were only used in shallow lead mines and miners camps and in the late 1870's the tallow works were replaced by other means.
In all the years i have been hubting the gold feilds i rarely find any relic that come close to the start of the 1800's. Found a few silvers {shilling , sixpence, australian 3d and a silver sixpence token} . Yes with a hole in it. . Yet again if someone had not brought this token here after the fact in way of coin jewellery i may have never have found it, in part of the country.
