I thought I really had a good day planned for myself and my wife, and was going to come home with the goods today! I got several new sites to check and they all sounded great. First place was a spot where they were clearing land for a subdivision. The owner of the property told me they found lots of neat stuff there. When I got there, I think they had bulldozed too much and the targets were just gone.
Next up was an old 1900s brick store on the main street in a neigboring small (almost a ghost town) town. The floor was gone, and I walked in on the dirt floor. Apparently this is not the original dirt on that floor, since it was mostly sand and there were cans and pulltabs at 4" deep. How in the world that happened I don't know.
After that, my wife decided she'd be happier at home, so I dropped her off at home and went to an old church I just got permission to hunt. This place is out in the boonies, and has a board with the name of the church and the date of 1885 on it. The bulding appears to be consistent with that. I hunted, and hunted, and hunted some more. I finally told myself I wasn't leaving without one coin, even if it's just a measley lincoln memorial cent. And it was...a 1977. Then a 1995 and what appears to be a leather rivet. I tried a different detector just to be sure I wasn't losing my mind...nothing but a bullet.
So, I drove into town (it's going to be dark pretty soon by now)...and was about to go to the old park that I usually hit when all else fails. Just before the park, I found a lot that was cleared where a huge resort hotel once stood in the 1860s. This town was world famous back in those days, and the cream of the crop (presidents, rockefellers, etc...) stayed at this resort before it burned to the ground in 1907. I couldn't park fast enough.
I hopped out and started swinging. I guess it was about 4 hours later, I finally came home with these two coins. One was a worn indian, but I love to find indians...
The other was a cruddy caked up coin. I just knew it was gonna be a good one, because of all the buildup on it. I soaked it in hot peroxide with little results. I picked and tried to get it clean. Finally I heated it with a torch and dropped it in ice water. That's when the crud fell off to reveal a dadburn memorial cent!
Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, and sometimes you shouldn't have even played, lol! I am happy to get the indian anyway...it's only my 5th one detected.
