iron overload=sword

Do you dig overload iron ? today while out detecting my property I had an overload , dug down 2'' to see what it could be as signals here are few and far between.

everything I dig here is shallow as I'm on a rock outcrop overlooking the river.

Well I'm very happy with my find and posted here to ask if this is a US civil war sword ?
pics are from recovery and once I got it 20191215_123857.jpg20191215_123615.jpg20191215_122946.jpg out.

it is in the scabbard and stuck. how would you preserve this find ? real nice other than bent up a little.

I was hoping someone would know how to clean or preserve the sword . I tried to change the title to include the word sword but I guess that's not allowed. anyway thanks for the replies .

Soaking in apple cider vinegar is a gentle a method as I know, it would take a lot of acv and probably many weeks, then I find rem gun oil helps prevent flash rusting but there’s probably better ways to protect...

the down side if it’s heavily rusted and thin metal it may come out looking like Swiss cheese

thanks for the reply , it seems very solid and far from rotten.I may try the ACV . I guess the sword will never come out of the scabbard at this point.

It could come out with acv I’ve got tools that were balls of rust that now move again
Here’s my favorite example just happened to find two identical pairs of pliers

thanks for the reply I've found blades and handles but this is my first complete sword in over 30 years of hunting.

Other than flea markets and collectors hoards practically NOBODY finds complete swords anymore. Finding one 90% intact in the ground is quite remarkable today.

I know I was shocked , I thought it was going to be a tee post or rebar . it was so shallow the overload siren was blasting on my machine. most of the time it's a plow point or horseshoe when it does that.
