It does look like it could be part of a scabbard for a sword or knife. It's kind of cool what ever it is.

It's a case for a Djeep type disposable lighter. You could get them at most convenience stores in the 80's and 90's. See pic below.

D-minus, would the case have been open at each end? Your ID may be correct but the walls of this item seem too thick and substantial for a lighter case. A vehicle tire probably crushed it. Weighs 4 oz and measures 3-1/4" x 2".

The walls are thick because it's made of die cast metal (like a matchbox car). Yes, the case can be open on each end.

Cheaper to manufacture. I've seen them with no bottom in stores. They're glued on to a cheap disposable lighter.
