It's heavy brass and has been hand engraved. There were two holes at the top on either side and there is a "pocket" in the back which has been slightly crushed in. I have reason to suspect sword part but I'm not too familiar with those types of relics. I did find it close to where I found an early 18th century sword hanger piece...similarly engraved...

Romeo, that is one awesome little find. Maybe posting the sword hanger part which has the same engraving next to this piece would jar someone's recognition?

p.s. a real long shot, but there are some scabbard chafes out there that appear to be non-symetrical

Johnnyi ... you are correct... except it's "scabbard chape" ... and I would bet that is exactly what it is... good call.

PS: great find... very old one. and yes the "hanger piece" is also from a sword. Would be nice to know where the rest of it is... so GO BACK !! heh

Boy Romeo, you found the sleeper of the week. Now as ARRC suggested, you are committed to dig some iron. No way out of it now! It will be great seeing what shows up.

Any guess as to the approximate age? My Googling pulls up a bunch similar from the medieval period but this was found in Canada so not likely that old...
