The hand guard has to have a slot in it center so that the tang of the knife,sword can go through it. The bottom picture looks like it made of cast iron.I wouldnt trust cast iron as a hand guard.Brass is better,it will catch a blade because its softer than steel.

Does it go all the way through?Cant tell.The cast iron would still be an issue(if thats what it is).Cast iron is brittle it breaks easy.take a high carbon steel,battle ready sword,give it a full swing,hit it like you mean it,and I guarantee that hand guard would snap.you cant have that in a sword made for battle.So if its a true sword hand guard it would be a club sword,lodge sword,wall hanger etc.

if it was a sword chances are its just a wall decoration and not a real weapon
