Relic Hunting
Found this at an 1860's era house. It's brass and it looks to have had a hook at the bottom. I've been on the hunt for civil war relics have I finally made a cw find? Please help out with what I've found...

looks a little like a broken spur part

PS. posted at the same time as above, I agree.

Thanks for the info. I've been killin myself trying to find some cw stuff around here but it's tuff find a place and getting permission everywhere I go the people all seem to say they already have a guy who detects and they are the only one they allow. There's tons of cw history to my area it's just been tuff to get into the places.

I don't think it's a spur part, because it looks like there was something riveted to it by the loop. More in line with your clip thought. I don't know if it's a sword clip or not though, that style has been around a long time and been used for a lot of different things. I'll bet one of the CW guys can tell you though.

That pic that iron patch sent is the closest thing ive seen to what I have and it's an exact match other than the riveted spot on the back even has the same general designs on it. I wish we could see a pic of the back side of that one.

The house it was found at was a doctors house from the civil war period. The story has it that he committed suicide in the early 1920's. I've found loads of stopper type medicine bottles.

So, I was looking through some other threads, happened upon this picture of an old horse halter, and noticed something that looked familiar. The piece on the far right of the halter looks very much the same as your piece in this thread.

Nice find! I found one at an old farm site here in SW Missouri and was advised by fellow T-netters that it was part of a horse harness, with the curved end broken off. Just a thought, keep digging and have fun. Sub

Yeap, the above is much better, because the iron fixing bothered me when thinking about the sword hook.

I dunno,I have dug quite a few of those in non-battle sites. They were used on horse harness.....

I keep falling off the fence, I don't know which way to go, but it seems more horse than person to me:dontknow:

I don't know what the right answer is, but I do believe there was probably way more swords around than we realize.

My guess is that it was a design that worked well for many things at the time, so some were created as horse tack and some as sword clips and possibly some for other purposes. They may have had subtle differences not as easily seen now, but a specific purpose at that time. Also without knowing how much was broke off and what shape ie curved, straight, angled, it starts to become a guessing game as we have already seen a few pictures that looked similar but were for different purposes.
