Hmm, maybe? But the hilt is the whole handle -- grip, pommel and guard (which I'm sure you mean, and googling shell guard images might be a worthwhile search. I don't know enough to declare "is or is not", but a quick question: Does it appear to be broken off of the other half (or off of something)?

The folding counter guards that I have are rounded in the center to roll on the ball for comfort when it's being worn. It shows no wear for being a counter guard and they are a lot more ornate and detailed usually. Plus that one is not uniform in the way that the other pictured counter guards are shown. I would think more likely it would be a scabbard plate just because of the lack of detail or a handle from an old stove oven door even.View attachment 723001

I cannot say with 100% certainty that it is a folding guard but sure looks like one to me . Not all had the round attachment some were square and some were hinge type. Some had nothing at all on them so that one would be ornate compared to plain.

It is also possible That its not a folding guard but a fixed one that is broke in half,
A check for hinge pin holes would tell if its folding or not.
