Could it be a sheath for dagger? I've seen those little cylinders on the bottom on Persian things. Mostly jewelry.

Kinda looks like one of them doo-dads that hang on the front of a Scotsmans kilt.

Just exploratory thinking:
It seems to me as though the metal strap may have been a u-shape, and the attachments at each end were rotated the opposite way from shown and were actually one piece originally. At that point it would be like a mesh watch fob, except if the mesh is connected where it's shown that wouldn't be where I would expect it to connect on a watch fob.
Whatever the thingy is that is attached through the hole on the one end should be oriented so that the attachment pin sticking through is bent so as to be in the groove on the back side of the hole. And it would seem that there would have been a matching piece doing the same on the other end... If that makes any sense.

This seems to be a real stumper...I think the little cylinders are the key...

Maybe the others know, but I don't but where/what part of the world was this found, if it is a sword hanger or similar military eccoutrement the location would possibly help in the research?

Nova Scotia, Canada. The site started as French but was taken over by the British in the 1740s and stayed British...

The straight bar? It's pretty rigid but can be easily bent. It was bent when I first dug it and I straightened it in the field...maybe it was supposed to be bent. Lots of good conversation and ideas but still a mystery.

How rigid is the strap portion?

I think then that it was meant to be bent (described in my earlier post), in a U shape to hang on a belt. Now do the pieces on each side rotate, or are/were they attached in the position shown. I feel like they were supposed to cover the strap so that it wouldn't be seen. And it looks as though one of them has a bend at the side that would have gone around the bend of the strap.

The end pieces are attached in the position as shown. As seen the end closest to the chains is attached at an angle.

I am not sure what the application would be in this case, but I am pretty sure those tubular things are "Wodaabe" hair beads.
