Sword buckle or Rifle strap buckle?

Hi, I found this way way back in the woods of my house in the middle of no where, my land goes back in the 1800's, and just down the road is from about 1820. It is a little less then a size of a quarter, and some kind of buckle. I found either an old encampment area (know this because I've been many historic ones before and it matches) except bigger in size, or it's an extremely old old house foundation, before bricks. It was probably 300 - 400 yards from where I found this. There was a few civil war battles in my town, and thousands of troops walked the lands here. I am really hoping this is something good.

Might be CW & its smaller than I would expect but still likely.

I guess if I find anything else that would relate to the CW, then we should know for sure.

I think you can safely state it's an 19th c. equipment strap/utility buckle.

I agree with Crusader... and am hard pressed to agree it's more than a horse tack or equipment buckle.

Remember - Just because it's a CW "era" piece, doesn't mean it was used as CW army equipment, but nobody could argue that it's NOT a CW find.

Yeah but if its at least from that period then I will be happy.

Why is it when someone finds some piece of rusted crud, they immediately jump to the conclusion that it is related historically and even magically titles its potential use?

Just because it was found in a southern state does not mean that it came from the Civil War period!

I agree with what you saying although you have a hard line. Everyone posting on the what is it should start from a blank sheet & assume nothing. That way no-one will be disappointed. I think its is as likely CW as not. ie 50% at best. Unless it came from a stratified archaeological layer we will never know. I'm thinking not military related & utilitarian. But my guess work is based on a UK perspective.

Concur.

However, 150 years of farming has occurred throughout most of the Civil War grounds, and the potential for additional trash being deposited over those years as opposed to the short period of the battle or camp site is greater than imagined.

I would assume that this would be true of any find in any country, especially, historic England with its layers of occupation.

I'm opposed to puff or chest beating when there is no direct evidence except that it was found (maybe) where there was a battle or campground, or troops may have passed that part of the state.

Hell, for all we know, it may be a buckle from an old pair of roller skates. Or a Boy Scout's back pack strap broke whils stomping thru the woods.

Well considering that many battles were fought in this city, and thousands of troops hiked through these lands it makes you wonder. The house on this land dates back to about 1850 and is really close to historic CW areas. So therefor yes some of the things I find 6 - 8 inches deep can infact be CW items, so it's rude to make it sound like everything I will ever find will not be CW linked.

Your in a good state to find some great relics and coins..I would not dig the iron targets,it slows down the dig time for good targets.....I have found alot of things, but never a good iron target Keep at it,the civil war relics are there..... Relicdude
