That style of bayonet/sword-bayonet, having a J-hook at the front end of the "handle," was common in the later-1800s into the first half of the 1900s. It is mostly a European characteristic, from that time period... but World War 2 Japanese bayonets had that "J-hook" handle form. I'm not an expert on post-civil-war bayonets, but there are some folks here who are. They'll probably be able to give you a more-specific identification.

Well... There is another item "If only it could talk and tell it's story" kind of thing. Pretty neat thing to unearth.

Looks like a Japanese Navy Type 30 or 35 bayonet to me (?). c.1902-1945

How large is the inside diameter of the "ring" for the barrel? If it is less than 3/4" it's post-US Civil War era. Less than 5/8" post Spanish - American War era.

I'll measure the ring tonight when I get home. Excited to see what it really is!

I'm the last one to ask about how to preserve it but I'm sure someone will pipe in. I remember seeing somewhere not on tnet someone found a japanese short sword that was worth a ton of money. That's a Banner in my book Tommy
