Swings & Things

I stopped by a little park today and hunted the woodchip area for 1/2 an hour.I have tried this place before but never hunted it because there was ALWAYS a family or two there.Today it wa raining off and on so I figured I would try my luck.I dug 1-quarter,3-dimes,1-nickel,6-pennies,and a baby spoon. Penny signals were abundant so I skipped alot of them.I also dug 5 pulltabs and one earring.I was searching for gold or silver and dug this medal? Then got a nickel/foil reading under the swings.About 2 inches down was this 14K gold wedding band.I have dug more rings by the swings than any other place.Kinda makes me wonder.I dont know what the medal is ,I think maybe it was attached to a ribbon and is some type of scholastic medal.Remember to check those swingset areas! ;)

Thanx for lookin ,jimmy

Re: Swings & Things

Is anyone familiar with the symbol on the medal?

Re: Swings & Things

Nice ring, Jimmy. :) I'm going to have to hit the woodchips somewhere. Seems like there's good jewelry there.

Re: Swings & Things

Jimmy5503 asked about the symbol on the medal. It appears to be the symbol for Knowledge ...meaning specifically in this case, for Scholastic/Academic Knowledge. It shows a burning lamp sitting on a thick book. In that combination, the symbol represents "the light of Knowedge, gained from studying books."

Now, theorizing about the medal's origin (I'm just guessing likely possibilities here):
The medal could have been awarded by either a public school or a religious school. The latter were usually, but not always, a Catholic school a.k.a. a "parochial" school - used to be lots of that kind around ...younger people here can check The Blues Brothers movie. ;-)
