Suspender Clip? How old is it?

I found this in the woods today while metal detecting. I think it is a suspender clip, but I'm not 100% sure. On both ends of it, it says "S&J". Can anybody tell me for sure what this is, and how old it is?

I don't know for sure but I have always been told they are around 1880 to 1890s.
